Christian Counseling

Christian Counseling

Christian religious beliefs and spirituality can be an important part of who we are. For many, these beliefs and practices are part of daily life from a young age, and the tenants of our faith underlie all that we do. If you’re a Christian who has avoided therapy because you are reliant on your faith to get you through tough times, it’s important to understand that this is not an either/or situation. Instead, Christian counseling offers the benefits of both therapy and religious practice, allowing you to integrate your faith into your therapy plans. On this page, you can learn more about just what Christian Counseling is and how our therapists help.

What Is Christian Counseling?

Christian counseling is an approach to therapy that utilizes traditional talk-based counseling techniques combined with Christian principles, teachings, and practices. What that looks like specifically may vary from person to person, but in general, it means our therapists will meet you in a place of understanding about how your Christian faith permeates all aspects of your life. They will work with you to utilize the wisdom inherent in Christian faith combined with evidence-based therapy practices that are proven effective.

Why Should I Choose Christian Counseling?

Like other forms of therapy, people may choose to pursue Christian counseling for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Achieving goals related to mental, emotional, and/or behavioral health.

  • Developing and improving relationships of all kinds (familial, personal, professional, faith community, and romantic).

  •  Finding purpose and satisfaction in everyday life.

  • Improving parenting skills or increasing bonds with children.

  • Managing the effects of mood disorders like anxiety and depression.

  • Navigating life transitions or difficult times.

  • Healing during times of grief and loss.

  • Understanding and improving low self-esteem.

  • Reducing high levels of stress.

  • Deepening faith and spirituality.

What Happens During Christian Therapy Sessions?

Christian counseling sessions, like traditional talk therapy sessions, start by setting goals in partnership with your counselor during your initial sessions. After you’ve set these goals, your therapist will work with you in each session to achieve your goals, manage any mood or cognitive disorders, change behaviors that cause challenges, or improve your daily life. During sessions, you’ll review how life has gone between visits, discuss progress or setbacks in achieving your therapy goals, and learn skills and strategies for managing emotions and navigating life’s challenges. In addition to these traditional talk therapy techniques, you may also incorporate prayer, biblical reading, church doctrine, and other faith-based practices to support your goals if you would like to incorporate these aspects into your sessions.
