Therapist / Community Liaison

Hello & welcome! My name is Julia Wellons, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Nationally Certified Counselor in Virginia. I hold a Bachelor's Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master’s of Science in Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from St. Bonaventure University.

As a relational therapist, I value authenticity + connection. I believe the therapeutic relationship itself is collaborative and is a key tool for healing. I emphasize rapport building, open communication, and here-and-now processing to create a safe space to walk alongside you towards change.

I like to approach therapy through a relational lens. There’s the relationship we have with ourselves, consisting of our inner most thoughts + emotions, the relationship we have with our physical bodies (yes, movement is important!), the relationships we have with others, and the relationship we have with the world.

Therapy with me generally looks like learning coping skills and processing what I call “today problems”. I tend to nudge clients to “go deeper”and look beneath the surface. Together, we press “the rewind button” to explore how life experiences—things that did or did not happen— have shaped the lens through which you see the world.

My approach is integrative because one size does not fit all! I incorporate techniques from CBT, ACT, DBT, with hints of psychoanalysis and attachment theory. I, too, love me some neuroscience, and am known to educate clients on neurobiology and physiology, and how that impacts our mental health.

I work with teens and adults ages 14 and up. I have experience working with a variety of difficulties including trauma, anxiety, depression, stress + burnout, life transitions, low self-esteem, and BPD. I am LGBTQIA+ affirming and culturally competent--I am super passionate about advocating and offering space for those of us who may not have the space in greater society.

Thanks for reading & I hope you will join me on an awesome therapeutic adventure!
